Shooting Stars Ages 5-7
For my little shooting stars who are just starting out, lessons are all about musical discovery. Instead of a traditional vocal warm up, we focus on vocal exploration – what different types of sounds can we make? Using lots of short, simple songs, we explore different emotions, speeds, pitches and characters, and reflect on how those sounds are different from each other. Most of the songs I use have physical actions, or use props and require a bit of silliness, which is perfect for engaging children in music and creating positive associations.
We slowly introduce musical concepts through songs and games, covering things like keeping the beat, different types of rhythm and solfa, as well as things that are important for singing like posture and breathing. Unless the student is particularly musically apt, we won’t work on a full song, but we may work on some shorter songs, like folk tunes.
Super Stars Ages 8-12
For slightly older students, there is still definitely an aspect of vocal exploration to lessons, but with a little more structure. We’ll begin lessons with a vocal warm up, but the warm ups are fun and a little bit silly, linking whimsical words and sounds to common warm up patterns. We also begin some aural training, mostly focused on pitch-matching and holding basic harmony. Musical concepts are explained in fun ways, with child-friendly language.
We’ll start to work on a full song, breaking it down bit by bit and getting it to a performance standard. The students and I work together to find a song to work on – if a song they want to sing is too tricky for them right now, we’ll find a similar song that’s better suited to their voice.
Shining Stars Ages 13-18
As singers move into their teen years, we’ll build on vocal technique, adding in a little more of the anatomy of singing and some more technical words. We dive deeper into aural training and improve harmony skills with rounds and part songs.
This is around the time where young singers start to figure out which music style suits their voice, so we focus more on learning repertoire in particular genres. We play around with songs that might have some challenging sections, or that need greater breath control and start to build up vocal stamina.
Senior Stars Ages 18+
For adult students, the way the lesson is structured is up to you, in a way. What are your goals? What is your previous singing experience? Are you working towards an audition or performance? I’m here to help you achieve your goals, and become the most confident singer you can be. We’ll have an in depth chat about how best to proceed in your first lesson, and from there, the sky’s the limit!

Which lesson is the one for me?
For child students, as a general rule I recommend 30 minutes for children aged 5-12 and 45 minutes for children aged 13-17.

For adult students, I usually recommend 30 minutes for casual singers, 45 minutes for singers looking for extension, and 60 minutes for singers working towards specific goals.

These recommendations are only guidelines and I am definitely open to discussing an appropriate lesson length for you or your child, just reach out!
