Frequently
Asked Questions
-
What ages can be taught at Bright Star Vocals?Bright Star Vocals officially teaches any student aged 5 and above. If you have a child younger than 5 who is showing an interest in singing, feel free to reach out, as there is the possibility of teaching younger students in exceptional circumstances.
-
Am I able to sit and watch my child's lesson? For children's lessons, a parent or guardian may stay for the entirety of the initial lesson, however after this, parents or guardians will be required to remain outside the studio for the duration of the lessons. There may be future opportunities to watch sections of the lessons as they progress, but constant parent or guardian presence in the studio during lessons can cause students to feel pressured or nervous. For younger students, or students with additional needs, parental involvement may be required more frequently.
-
Which lesson length should I choose? For children, 30 minutes is recommended for students under 12, and 45 minutes is recommended for students aged 13-17. For adults, I recommend 30 minutes for complete beginners and casual singers, 45 minutes for singers looking for extension, and 60 minutes for students working towards specific goals. These are just general guidelines, and I'm happy to offer an appropriate lesson length based on the students needs and abilities. Please also consider the time the lesson is booked and the attention span of the student. For example, a 7 year old student booked in for a 60 minute lesson at 6pm is not being set up for success.
-
Is there a minimum commitment period for lessons? No, although it is recommended to continue lessons for at least a term to allow any adjustments in technique to settle in.
-
Do I get to choose which songs I sing? The short answer is yes, however if you wish to sing something that is technically too advanced for you (or is not age-appropriate if the student is a child), we’ll work together to find another song in a similar style that will better suit your current skill level. I don't believe in forcing singers to sing songs they don't actually want to sing.
-
What do I need to bring to my lesson?Students should bring with them a display file for any sheet music or lyric sheets, a pencil for notating their sheet music or lyric sheets, and a water bottle. If you would prefer to use an iPad or tablet and receive digital sheet music instead, that's completely fine!
-
How much notice do I need to give for any absences? If you will be absent due to travel, or due to a clashing commitment, a minimum of 48 hours notice is required. If you will be absent due to illness, direct notice must be given before 9am of the day of the lesson. Failure to notify by these deadlines will result in a cancellation fee equivalent to the full lesson price.
-
Do you offer make-up lessons if I'm unable to attend my regular lesson?Make up lessons will only be offered in extraordinary circumstances. They may be offered at a day or time different to your usual time, and may possibly be outside of Bright Star Vocals' regular studio hours. If you are unable to attend the make up lesson offered, and have paid in advance as part of a lesson bundle, you will be entitled to a refund.
-
My child has additional needs, will they be able to have singing lessons at Bright Star Vocals?Bright Star Vocals is an inclusive singing studio, and Belinda believes that everybody should have the chance to sing. Belinda will work with you to offer the best support to the student, and lessons are highly adaptable to suit the needs of the student. Please don't hesitate to reach out to see if Bright Star Vocals is right for you.
-
Are lessons one on one or in groups?Bright Star Vocals currently only offers one on one lessons, however if enough interest is received for group classes, it's something that may be offered in the future.
-
When do lessons run?For students under the age of 18, lessons run during school terms, and do not run during the school holidays. For students aged 18+, lessons run each week for the whole year, except during the two weeks surrounding Christmas and New Year.
-
My child needs a reference for a school program application, are you able to provide one?References will be provided to any current Bright Star Vocals students upon request, simply send me an email or fill out the contact form.
-
How do I pay for lessons? An invoice will be sent to you within 48 hours of the conclusion of the lesson. If you purchase a lesson bundle, an invoice for the full amount of the bundle will be sent to you within 48 hours of the conclusion of the first lesson. Invoice payment is required within 7 days of receipt. Bright Star Vocals is unable to accept cash payments.
